Welcome to Soaring, a fanlisting for Carcharodon carcharias, the Great White Shark. Peter Benchley, the author of Jaws, once stated that all young men are either obsessed with dinosaurs or sharks. I absolutely am obsessed with the latter. Ever since I saw Jaws as a young kid, I have been fascinated with sharks, particularly Great Whites. I look forward to learning about them on Shark Week each year. I devour books and movies about them.

It's hard to pinpoint exactly what I find so awesome about Great Whites. It could be their status as one of the Ocean's number one predators. It could be their size and power. It could be how they look terrifying and beautiful at the same time. It could be their intelligence; did you know Great Whites have an extra sense called the Ampullae of Lorenzini which enables them to detect electromagnetic disturbances? It's cool as hell. They can tell when potential prey is in distress and locate them by just feeling them. Great Whites are fascinating.

Unfortunately, as much as I love movies like Jaws, they have painted a very bad picture of Great Whites. Great Whites have been hunted, putting them at risk of extinction. While it's true that they are the number one man-eating shark in the world, they don't intentionally hunt humans, and most Great White attacks have been non-fatal. We're just not their preferred prey.

The reality is Great White Sharks are like any natural predator and should be respected. Anytime you enter the territory of a ferocious animal, you run the risk of being attacked. By learning more about them, taking precautions like using a buddy system when we surf or swim in shark-infested waters, and being aware of our surroundings, we can absolutely coexist.

Great Whites are interesting and captivating, and they should be admired, not eliminated. If you are a fan of Great Whites like I am, click the links above and join the list of fans! You do not have to have a website to join, just an appreciation for this magnificent creature.
